    Whistlin' Hank

Time for a new project. It was either cut up the Tacoma and buy a new DD or just build a specific offroad Truggy. I chose the later.

    Introducting Hank :

    The gameplan:
Make it radtacular. It will be island spec - but hopefully ill be able to encorporate some good tech in here.

So those pictures were back when I bought it in the summer. Since then I've slowly built up a parts collection and an idea of what I want to turn this thing into.

Traded the 33's on it for some 37" MTR's and picked up some Karnage Fabworks beadlocks:

For Hank to be radtacular, its going to have to perform well in poser flex shots. Some 14" Swayaways should help with that:

Im weak for a man so if im ever going to steer this thing ill need some help. I bought a set of built axles which has a fancy POS ram mounted on it. Stuffed inside are 5.29's and in the back a rear disc conversion.

I have some parts left over from my tacoma sas - including rotors and calipers. The game plan is to replace the stock stuff on this axle with those.

I recently started to tear into this thing. I want to do it right so has to come all apart.

This is my new engine stand:

Sold the suspention out of the truck, so I had to come up with some jack stands. Since its not moving any time soon this was the easy solution:

And this is going to turn plain ol Hank into Whistlin' Hank:

I picked up a intake manifold off of a 3rd gen pickup 22re ( 89-95 ). The reason I wanted this syle as apposed to the older one is the direction it points the throttle body. The older style causes the charge pipe to kinda interfere with the return coolant line to the rad.

I also grabbed a 5mge throttle body which has a larger butterfly valve and will have to bore out the intake manifold out a bit with a die grinder to match the diameters.

If you havnt guessed already - Ill be running propane, drawing the fuel mixture through the tubro, and pressurizing it in the charge pipe. Because of this ill have to plug some ports on the manifold, which Im still figuring out. Obvious ones are the fuel injector ports. Ill still need a vaacum line to the brake booster, and the coil anddd i feel like somewhere else too.

Anyhow you know what it looks like but here are some pics:

I believe its a stock 22RET manifold and the turbo is a toyota CT-26 off a supra. From what I've read its a big upgrade over the CT20 and has metal turbine blades which should do well for the draw through set-up. Its both oil and water cooled as well.

Now this is my first turbo build. That being said i believe a proper setup should have both a BOV and a Wastegate. The turbo has a built in wastegate set at about 7psi ( whichi s what im going to run ). Because the charge pipe will contain a gaseous mixture, I cant have that blowing off into the engine bay for obvious reasons. Im thinking of running a recirculating blow-off which will dump it back in after the mixer and before the turbo. It will run rich for a second but whatcha gonna do.

Anyhow I havnt seen someone running this set-up with a BOV and im wondering why? my thought is tha either people think that a BOV is the same thing as a wastegate or they like to eat turbos.

you can just vent the wastegate and bov into your exhuast the reason most guys dont do it is 7 psi on a turbo that can take 20 psi easily normally doesnt kill it easily. The built in wastegate isnt very good it cant dump boost very well id just buy a ebay wastegate it saves the motor

That makes sense, I have the wastegate dumped into the downpipe right now, and I guess ill test to make sure its opening at the right pressure.

If your wastegate isn't working good enough then the boost will rise above the 7 psi or whatever you have it at. When they can't flow enough the exhaust gas can't bypass the turbine wheel and the turbo spins faster and makes more boost. It's called boost creep and if it gives you more boost then your setup can take shit can blow. You can port out the internal wastegate to flow more to bring the boost down to a safe level and when that doesn't work you need an external one. Either that or upgrade your shit to handle the extra boost.
The word "jones" is a slang term meaning to crave, want, or desire; or, to feel withdrawal from an activity of passion. The general slang meaning is often associated with addictive substance habits but can be applied on a more universal scale.

What he said. Nice turbo by the way. I found it Wasnt the best in the trail. Ct26 lag in the bottom as they should being from a 6 cyl. Power is there in the upper rpms and especially on the street, but If I did it again i'd probably use a smaller turbo for quicker spooling out of the hole.. ct26 sounded cool though.
As for creep, I used a 7m turbo bypass valve. Worked mint. the gate on that thing popped from 7-8.5 psi. wandered around a bit. The turbo is low km though, 86,000 from a wrecked supra.

    Build looks killer btw

    Double low and pin it

What steering cylinder is that? I need full hydro, but I hate Trail Gear, and I haven't been impressed with what I've seen of PSC stuff...

Edit: nevermind, figured out POS was the company name for your steering, not "piece of shit" like I thought at first. Seems they're no longer in business.

I like this solution for jackstands. Good idea. I might have to come up with a variation on the theme; I've been hating on the regular stands for while.

Thanks. I wanted to put 2 on rollers and 2 on casters but the wallet said no. I plan on adding them at some point. it would be nice to be able to shimmy it around
