    nissan project

Well, I have been working on my dads little nissan 720 pickup for a little bit, started with a rusty floor repair, now a SAS...figured since the weather was still not that bad, better do it before the crappy weather starts to fall on us. I have taken a pile of pics so far, basically wanted to build a more capable 4x4 out of what he had, and with the tech help from a few individuals such as dirtbag and a few others, and some good hookups on some parts from J-ROCK and David from Annex auto wreckers in nanaimo for letting me take some stuff out of his personal toyota collection, it was an easy decision to make. The whole plan now it to finish up with the SAS, build a flatdeck, bobbed frame, and depending on weather will be an exo as well.

A few pics of progress so far, I will update pics as I progress

    enjoy

I have the front just tacked in place, need to cut some gussets up, tack them in, then weld everything up. Thats it for now.....rear springs and hangers going in this weekend

the nice thing about it will be that I now will have a backup 4x4, as well as a choice as to what truck to take on what trips depending on whether the trails will be full size friendly or not I will also be taking it on its virgin run to see how it works, so when that happens I will post a trail invite. It will be welded front and rear also. Dad has a line on a small block chevy already but I told him next year, we got our work cut out for us right now thanks for the compliments guys

for now we are going to run the nissan rear diff, I used to drag race and slalom race nissans and the truck rear diffs are pretty tough, but I never have installed large truck tires on them and abused them yet, only slicks. If we have problems then we may try a toy diff out......as for the tight trails.......I will take ya up on that offer chris, I may end up putting my winch on this truck for a little while I do some stuff on my truck, dad plans on running an 8274 anyways so I will build the bumper to accomidate one regardless.

This weekend is lifting the rear and front brakes, picked up some new front calipers, pads, and rotors, and going to get slim to make up some lines.....hint hint slim And possibly making up some shock hoops or buying some fords, and install some 5012's.

Anyone have any caliper bolts from a toy or know the size of bolt used? Do they have a shoulder? Any info would be appreciated as I dont have any bolts to look at.

    cheers Dwain

oh sure the only day you decide to come on by dad and I take the night off to relax and have a few beers and discuss whats next kind of thing, when you free next? Could always use a hand especially now that dad and the grinder got in a fight the other day, the score.......grinder 1, dad 0, he has stitches in one hand now

The best way to go is SFA from a Toyota like 81 to 85/86 because the frame rails are the same width. If he can find a complete front end he should be set. I think fsjeep is using an 81 Toy.

yeah I am using an 81 toy axle, the process is pretty straight forward, just have to build your new drop hanger and spring hangers, and I am in the middle of figuring out what to do for steering, I have a couple ideas though, and I have the rear suspension out but I have a stomache flu right now so its been going slow lately

The reason I said 85/86 was because I couldn't remember at the time of the post when Toyota went IFS but I did know it was mid 80's but didn't they still run SFA in the one ton's? I'm not a Toyota guy so I am not sure. I guess I could have gotten nitpicky and looked it up but at 2am but I was just too tired and knew some one would eventualy try to make it blatintly obvious if I was wrong Next time I will just go with early 80's.

after a few days off the project from being sick and crappy weather, did some more work today, got the box off, cut the rear spring and shackle hangers off the frame, fixed a soft spot on the drivers side frame rail, made some rear shackles, got the fuel tank out, got a high steer kit on order, bought all new brake stuff for the front, got a set of wheels, bolted the rear springs to the axle, cut the box in half and took it and all the ifs junk down to budget steel. Well did most of that today and a little the other day Tomorrow I will hang the rear suspension and set it on its wheels, and box in the rear of the frame, build some gussets for the front crossmember, and hopefully start on a new front bumper so we can put the front grill assembly back in. Slowly but surely, there's definately more work in a project like this than I ever expected, since I had to fab everything cause the nissan just isnt that common to build so off the shelf kits aren't available.

Here are a couple more pics......

pretty close to how it sits now

and the junk I was taking to budget steel

Today I got busy and finished up the frame repair, then hung the rear suspension, installed the rear d-shaft and e-brake cables, and got the tires we're going to run for now mounted on some rims and on the truck to see how it sits....

pic of it at the end of today

thanks chad....its starting to look like a truck now....the suspension is soooooo soft....no shocks in it yet but I think it'll be a fun little truck to wheel...cant wait till the highsteer comes. The 31" tires look small on it though

I think while we are waiting for the highsteer we will box in the rear of the frame and get started on the flatdeck, and I will finish up the welding on the front crossmember and gussets. We also have to lengthen the front shaft and probably send the birfs to travis, and install the front brakes. Also on the list this week is to install some shocks and towers on the front
